Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore Elite Ultra Wave Microwave Hood Combination I purchased in 2003. For the last two days it took longer to heat a cup of water and today I heard a pop sound, and a smell. The microwave was complete shut off and would not turn on - nothing worked. I checked the circuit breaker and it was ok. What's wrong and is it worth fixing? Thank you, Linda

Look for a blown fuse inside the case. Replace the high voltage diode and the 'stirrer' (a fan-like device inside the sheet metal waveguide near the microwave energy opening in the cooking cavity). The stirrer has a plastic bearing that frequently shorts out from an arc if the machine is run empty. You can find parts at: searspartsdirect.com If you do the work, the parts are not prohibitive. Best of luck!

Replace air-heating switch on dash

Your description of your switch problem may be a different problem entirely. There is a less than reliable part called a blower motor resistor which prevents the blower from working at all in any mode:vent, A/C, or heat.

This part is usually under the hood and can be found by following the heater blower wires from the blower to a small switch mounted either in the Firewall or duct work under the hood. It usually has 1 wire and 2 mounting bolts on it.

Often a moderate tap with the end of a broom handle will reset it. This repair can last indefinitely. Sad part of this is that a new part will not last any longer so once the Warranty is over you are no further ahead than with your old unit.

If the problem is still in the dash control it depends on whether you are using Electronic or old fashion mechanical control knobs. Some circular knobs had problems with the knob splitting and failing to turn the shaft.

Some of the dash cover plates are snap fittings. I sometimes recommend you go to a Salvage yard that allows you access and try dismantling a similar unit so you know how to do it.

Replacing cup holder

I assume you mean the one that flips up in the center console?

If so, there are three likely issues.

1) did you slide out the retainer from the upper screw? the top screw had a cover that had to be pried off. you then took the screw out. Lastly you have to slide out the plastic retainer that the screw went into. It slides out towards the opening.

2) you have to have the cup holder partially open to remove it. the hinged part that folds up is stored in the cavity under the console when closed. you have to open the cup holder and keep pushing until the front of the cup holder lip comes up. Work the cup holder up and down until it comes out.

3) the cup holder is stuck in place due to years of spilled liquid. If you've done the above, then you can either spray soapy water on the creases around the opening and let it set, or you can apply strategic brute force.
Be aware through. if this is the center console cup holder just behind the gear shifter. There are two screws and nothing else to hold it in. Just be carefull....

It's likely that a head gasket is blown, causing fluid to go out of the exhaust pipe especially if you see none on the ground. You might smell a 'sweet' antifreeze/water smell out of the pipe at idle.

Where is the numbers hidden for the door combination

Usually on hinges on liftgates and doorjams. Sometimes dealers write the code in the owners manual. You can try the hood hinges and under the lip of the reargate as a last resort.

If you take the vehicle to a dealer they should be able to get the info from your VIN

We took the serpentine belt off our 03 ford taurus and there is no diagram to put it back on

There should be a diagram under the hood.
Look at the pully's, those with grooves get that side of the belt and those without get the other side, work your way around the outside, doing the water pump last

2003 Audi TT Quatro Coupe. The radiator cooling fan does not work. Vehicle over heats because the fan does not work. Replaced the radiator cooling fan motor and the temperature sensor. The problems is...

The main reason for the over heating of the audi tt is to do with the water pump. The propeller within the first type of water pumps is made of plastic. This was to prevent corrosion, however was never designed to last longer than 5 years. What you need to do is purchase the new style water pump. These new style water pumps have been designed with a metallic propellor which should resolve the overheating. Let us know how you get on.
