Sounds like your talking about a tie rod end its on the end of your power steering rack. if thats the case pull tire off look for tie rod end. mark its position on the rod. the you should have a nut and a codder pin remove pin take nut off leave tie rod inside hub for now.loosen nut or bolts connected to power steering arm at this point you can use a tie rod separater fork or just TAP on houseing and it should come off in a couple good swings use a brass hammer for this or dead blow you can use a regular hammer but be sure not to damage metal. remove and put back it same position

Well not sure -- it could be referring to your steering rack, rack and pinion steering, in that case your left tie rod end is shot. Clarify with the person who told you it needed to be replaced.

It's part if the steering. Since you don't know anything about it, it would be best to let a garage with an alignment machine do the work.

What are signs of a bad rack ends

When the rack ends go bad, they produce rattling noise from the front end of the suspension on pitted or broken roads. If so is the case the entire suspension system need to addressed properly.

Can you adjust thebrack and pinion on a 2000 Sebring?

Hi Jim, What about the rack ends? They also wear out. Chock the wheels and apply the parking brake, jack up the front end and test for play by moving the road wheels left and right by hand. If the play is there remove the rubber boots and check for wear on the rack ends (coming out from the rack) If you see movement from the rack its self the whole unit must be replaced. Regards John

Rack and pinion? have play in wheel no sign of leaks new power steering pump installed

Hi Gunny, If your vehicle is fitted with rack and pinion steering also check the rack ends for play. The rack ends are the rods which the tie rod ends screw onto. The other end fits onto the rack of the rack and pinion. To work on those you will need to remove the rubber boots and loosen the locking washer, they can then be loosened with a wrench. If they are worn the play will be evident in the steering. When replacing them also replace the rubber boots. If the boots are worn and road grime and dust enters, you will see leakage from the rack and pinion in the near future. I always thought the Dakota was fitted with a steering box? Regards John

I have trouble steering...the truck wanders over the road...i have replaced idler arms, pitman arm, center link, shocks, brakes, new tires, front end alignment, bearings...the right front tire sits...

when the steering wheel is centred, the front wheels should both point slightly inwards.
after the amount of parts changed, i would recommend that you get the tracking checked at a garage using the proper, calibrated measuring systems, to make sure that the steering is set up properly and safely.

I have a creaking noise coming from the front driver side when making turns at low speed. Also, the front driver side tire is wearing off on the inside. Kim

the tie road end + rack end is the main proplem for making your tire wearing off
the noisy at slow speed coming from tire
you can check that by make the tire free by putting the car on the lift then you catch the tire from side and try to move it (in-out) if its move that mean you need to change even tie road end or rack end or both

I have uneven wear on my 2006 toyota tundra tires, the right tires are worn much more on the outer edge than the left. any thoughts?

You have a front suspension part that is worn and/or need the front end aligned. If problem is in the rear you may need a four wheel alignment. If it was low air pressure it would wear the inside and outside edges of the tires.
