My key is stuck in the ignition. Won't lock.

My key is stuck in the ignition. It won't turn to lock position. I've tried jiggling and turning the steering wheel. I can start the engine, but when I try to shift gears (I have an automatic), the selector button won't depress.

Do I need a tow truck?

    I'm stuck in PARK now.

I tried your method to change to any gear. Problem is the button to change the gear is locked.

Have you tried depressing the " Brake pedal", turning steering wheel to centre position and then placing lever into PARK, before attempting to remove key?

Do not try to put the key in lock. if it will still start, then you will be able to replace the lock cylinder. if you rotate it to lock then you might not get it to turn again. as for the gear selector, there is a release on the shifter. some have a slot to stick a key and push down as you change gears. others you may have to take apart the console, and you will see the release lever.

What do I do when the key ignition started is stuck

Try turning the steering wheel and jiggling the key and lock back and forth while gently applying the brake pedal. The gearshift lever may also be the problem. Try moving it slightly while turning the key. Make sure you jiggle towards the off position or your starter might catch and spin.

KEY WON'T TURN ON THE IGNITION

Hi Aldene, Your vehicle seems too young to have a problem with a worn key so I suggest that the problem was related to the position of the steering wheel and the tongue of the locking mechanism. Sometimes when the lock engages it is under the load of the weight of the front wheels, if they are not in the straight ahead position. A small movement of the steering wheel is usually enough to release the steering lock. Regards John

Steering wheel won't lock, key won't come out

If the ignition normally only locks with the vehicle in park position, then check the switch on the gear lever mechanism is working.
If not, then you'll have to jiggle and wiggle that key out or replace the ignition lock.

Make sure your steering wheel isn't locked. Sometimes a key won't turn until you jiggle the wheel while trying to turn the key.

Cannot turn key in ignition to start car

Hi nicoleelgert, i suspect the steering lock is giving you the problem, all you need to do is turn the steering wheel left and right ( jiggle ) while turning the key in the ignition, it won't move much because it's locked but it will be enough to release the steering lock and allow you to turn key.. make sure you have the shifter in Park position too. Good luck . OK

THE IGNITION KEY WON"T COME OUT> I"VE TRIED

Under the steering column there is a small plastic piece that can be removed from the lower cover. Remove that piece. the hole will be big enough to put your finger in. If you look you will see the park lock cable where it attaches to the ignition lock cylinder housing. Push/pull lightly on that. It will move in one direction. As soon as you feel it move turn the key to the off position.
