Why does the shifter stick?

You have to have your foot on the brake pedal to release the car from Park. The brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the safety lock. The shifter is adjusted to mesh with this safety lock. The switch may be broken or out of alignment and that is why the safety lock is binding. Sometimes the switch is broken or out of alignment that your brakelights will not work. Check them.

Someone needs to find out why stuff is binding.

How do I fix a 2005 Toyota Brakelight which has a new bulb but still now lighting up?

If both lights arent working check fuses, and also you have a switch located under the dash along the pedal arm it may need adjusting or replacement.

Keep blowing brakelight fuse

On most models the brake light switch sends power to the solenoid that locks the shifter in park. I would check the solenoid for a short to ground.

I unhooked my stereo and now my brakelights arent working

This is purely a coincidence, you have inadvertently disconnected something else when you disconnected the radio, or the brake light sending switch, which is located above the brake pedal, has either become unplugged, needs adjusting, or is faulty.

Column shifter won't move out of park

I have the same problem, only after it rains. i have to maually override the shifter with a screwdriver for a couple of days, then it works fine again. Something to do with the back brakelights and the wiring. My service guy says he can run a bypass wire directly to the emergency brake light and correct the issue.

The gear-shifter solenoid or brakelight switch has failed.

To check the brakelight switch, start the car and step on the brake. If the brakelights don't come on, the switch is faulty. You'll find the switch under the dashboard above the brake pedal.

If the brakelights came on, your shifter solenoid is probably bad. In this case, here's a quick-and-dirty fix to get you moving...

Look for a small plastic cover next to the gear shift. Pop this off with a fingernail or small flat screwdriver. There will be a hole beneath the cover. Push a small screwdwiver down that hole untill you feel some resistance. You should now be able to shift out of park.

Be warned...this trick allows a shift even without touching the brake. So get the solenoid fixed as soon as you can.

Good luck !
