Question about 1996 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

This morning I came out to start my 96 jetta and the battery seemed dead. So I began the process of getting a jump and as soon as we connected the jumper cables to the jetta the alarm started going off. We tried to start the car while the alarm was going off and the key just turned but the car didnt turn on

The immobilizer feature was tripped when the alarm went off. It sounds like the battery was indeed dead. My Nissan 300ZX used to trip the alarm when I jump-started it, although my Audi A4 does not. When the alarm is going off, you have to disarm it with the key or key fob first, or you won't be able to start it. Try putting the key in the door, lock it, unlock it, lock it again, and unlock it again, just to make sure you get a couple of arm/disarm cycles, then try starting it.

I'm surprised your ignition key doesn't work for the door - my friend's 96 Audi A4 does, as does my 99 A4 and my friend's 2000 Passat.

Battery went dead now alarm is going off

Not supposed to jump VWs. Sounds like your immobilizer kicked in. You have to connect to a diagnostic tester and clear the errors before its gona start. Go see how to do it on http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.com

New battery & still won't start. Won't even make a noise. DEAD!

sounds like you have a problem with either the ignition switch itself or the solenoid on the starter if you jump positive power to the small wire on your starter and it turns the starter then it would be your ignition switch if it does not turn it replace your starter
