Drain a quart or two of anitfreeze from the radiator. There is a petcock on the bottom you can turn and drain some fluid out of.
The follow upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Disconnect the upper hose. Have a bucket and towel handy because there will be a little spillage.
Then remove 3 bolts on housing, remove housing, and pull out thermostat. Clean the area and reverse procedure.

Where is the thermostat on 2001 pontiac aztec?

i believe if you follow the upper rad hose to the motor, the cover that the hose attaches to is where the thermostat is.it should be a housing held on to the motor with 2 bolts and about 3"long and oval in shape.

Lost the keys to a 2001 pontiac aztec. Don't have

the dealer should be able to make you a key, all you need is the vin number, they can make a key for it, as loong as the ignition in the van is the one that came with the van, if it was replaced then they cant make one, if you didnt by van new then just have key made its mostlikely its original one, hope this helps.

2001 pontiac aztec, temp guage shows (very) high) temp reading. I take the battery cable off, replace cable, then it appears normal. I have done this for 4 months, everything is OK. Now it no longer solves...

if you have high miles, 75k or more I would go ahead and have tempature sensor and thermostat it self change. I don't see battery cable would have any bearing to the temperature guage or cooling process. Both switch work almost the same, at time it work well other time it read or work incorrectly because it a sign of unit becoming faulty. If the temperature sensor is faulty half of the time it well give you incorrect reading however if the temp sensor working properly and the Thermostat is not, you will also get a high temp reading due to the Thermostat is not working properly allowing the hot antifreeze to flow out from the engine to the radiator which cause the hot antifreeze to be remain lock up in the engine block. Thermostat suppose to open and close when it reach its temperature; at the same time I would also replace thermostat switch which operate the cooling fan. all three tend to go bad over times; replacing all three is a great ideas. Thermostat, thermostat switch and temperature sensor.

Where is the thermostat located on a 2001 Pontiac Aztec, and how do I change it?

hope you found it by now, but if not follow the tube from the top of the raditor into the top of engine. two bolts hold that in. its under the air cleaner assembly. not too easy to remove

TEMPEATURE GAGE READS HOT WHEN AT AN IDOL BUT MOTOR

If cooling fan works, it maybe a sticking thermostat not opening fully. Check that cooling system is full (check cold) first. Then if that seems ok, i would replace the thermostat.

Inside the glove compartment there may be a charcoal filter. I know my Aztec had one and replacing it made it blow like new.

grab hold of the upper radiator hose, and follow it back to the engine block. The housing the hose is attatched is where the thermostat is hiding :)
