I'm sorry. My husband is unsure of how to do that. I would like someone who could point me somewhere that has a step by step explanation. Of course we know it needs to be removed and replaced.

I don't know what a hex is. There are loose wires from the plug, it needs to be replaced but he doesn't know how to get into the engine to do so because it isn't just on top. He needs to take out parts of the engine and he just needs some information on how to do so. I don't have the instructions.

  • meghan_justi Nov 11, 2009

Ok, well thanks anyway. I will get someone else to help me with my problem. I don't know anything about cars, so I am doing the best I can.

  • meghan_justi Nov 11, 2009

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. I appreciate the help. The spark plug broke on it's own. I think going through a puddle of water caused the damage. The issue that my husband is telling me is it is below other parts of the engine so he is unsure of how to get to it. He said part of the plug is still there and there are parts of wires hanging out of another place. Is there more than one spark plug in a car? Does he have to remove parts of the engine to get to it, or should he try and work around them?

  • meghan_justi Nov 11, 2009

Oh please excuse me, I was replying to some one else who was commenting to me. Those comments were not directed to you. I appreciate all the help you can give me. I am unsure of how the Q&A works on here. I have a comment that I just posted that was directed to you.

  • meghan_justi Nov 11, 2009

I am unsure if there is compression coming out of the hole. The car is somewhere else because it broke down on the road and we won't be able to get back to it until tomorrow because of downpours. I know that when the problem first started the car would run, but then when I started the engine again for my husband to look at it it stalled out. And then I tried again and it stalled out again. I wish my husband were here to talk with you, he had to go back to work.

  • meghan_justi Nov 12, 2009

Great. Thank you very much for your help. If I have any further questions (as I'm sure my husband most likely will when he gets home late tonight) I will be sure to come back and ask them. Thanks again for your help and your time it is greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful evening.

If the hex,is still in the spark plug hole, just unscrew it,and replace with a new one,if the hex is gone, use a screw extractor,to remove it.

If the spark plug was broken,by some one, installing the spark plug or did it break on it`s own?If it broke on it`s own ,chances are,the hex is still there, the part of the spark plug that the socket fits onto.Take a 5/8 size spark plug socket, and slip it on the hex of the spark plug,if it is still there.Put a extention to put in the spark plug socket, and then a ratchet, and remove what is left of the spark plug,by turning the ratchet counter clock wise.To replace the spark plug, buy a new one,and start turning it in the spark plug hole clock wise,by hand,so it is not cross threaded,Then tighten the spark plug with the ratchet,by turning it clock wise.If the spark plug has no hex for the socket to grab,a screw extrctor would have to be used.Purchase it at the parts store, and ask for a number 3/8 size screw extractor, bladed type, and tap it in the broken spark plug hole, and then turn the screw extractor with a wrench,or adjustable wrench, counter clock wise until it comes all the way out.

That is most likely a coil pack, with electrical wires going to it,the coil has a boot on it witch goes to a spark plug.Is compression coming out of the hole when running?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Nov 12, 2009

You will be able to remove the spark plug by inserting a 5/8 spark plug socket into the hole and turn it a little and hold it at the angle of the hole,it will slide over the hex of the plug.then just trun it counter clock wise. One end of the broken spark plug should be in the boot,in the coil.

Spark plug hex,is just below the white area.next to it is the boot, and next to it is the coil, and boot together.

Your vehicle doesn't have spark plug wires . Has coil on plug ignition system . Eight individual coils sitting right on top of the spark plugs . An the spark plugs have the tendency to break in the cylinder head . Does your ford have the 5.4 L 3 valve engine . Your best bet is to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the tool to take the broken spark plug out off the cylinder head. 2003 gmc broken spark plug

If it is broken, you will need to replace it. A broken spark plug will ground to the engine making your vehicle drive poorly.

Enging cranks but no start, has spark and gas

Your engine is flooded with fuel. Check your throttle body if it's a fuel injected engine. Clean it. Remove spark plug, let it dry or replace with new ones.Try flooring your acc pedal and start. If it starts, you need to get the carb serviced. For fuel injected, you need to service/ repair/replace your throttle body, fuel injectors, idle air control valves and EGR.

My mazda v6 mx6 2.5, automatic misfiring. what could be the problem

what year and how many miles? check engine light on? problem could be as easy as a spark plug wire loose or broken. so first check for broken or loose spark plug wires check them close with your hand. u can also check at night time with the engine running, watching for an out of place spark. next i would check the spark plugs, remove and inspect for proper clearances. still no luck u can do a compression test on each cylinder. fuel delivery could also be a problem but a little more complicated to check. u could always put some fuel injector clean in ur fuel tank. ps if u take ur spark plugs out look at the spark plugs tips. compare the spark plugs with a spark plug condition chart. also always use anti seize compound on the threads of your spark plug before installation.

1997 cavalier, 140,000 miles. Check engine light and oil light on. was driving on the freeway and heard a popping sound, when id step on the gas it did not accelerate but opposite, it would sliw down....

I am suspecting that the cam chain/belt failed. Check for spark first. You can do this easily by pulling one of the spark plug wires and hooking it up to a known good spark plug. Ensure that the spark plug base is grounded to the car frame or engine and have someone try starting while you look at the gap on the plug. If you have spark, then likely you have a fuel delivery problem, but my money is that you do NOT have any spark going to the plug. There can be a plethora of reasons for this to occur, but at this mileage I would guess a broken timing chain/belt...particularly as you describe a "pop" prior to failure. This is not an easy repair for someone not used to living under the hood of a car. Call around different shops in your area and ask about estimate cost for timing belt repair. Evaluate from there. Good luck!

Broken spark plug coil bolt

If it is broken off below the surface you will have to try to drill it and use an easy out tool. And it may be frozen in the threads which is why it broke with you.

1998 Chevy Silverado K1500, 5.7 , number 5 cylinder keeps fouling the plug with oil. The insulator was broken in half vertically

If the insulator was cracked the plug would have been misfiring, unless it was broken while trying to remove it. If this oil fouling is an ongoing problem, and you have to keep changing the plug, buy a spark plug that is designed to fire when oil fouling is a problem. You may have to order one from a part catalog, such as JC Whitney. This would keep you going until you can get the problem repaired..

I have a 2000 navigator and the check engine lght came on so brought it in test said 8th spark plug was mis fire and need to change coil also so had it changed all was well for half the ride home then...

Hello epereira.
If you did not change the spark plug at the same time it may be overloading the ignition coil. Also there may be a broken, worn or carbon tracked insulator on the spark plug.

(1) If the gap is worn it makes the coil work harder trying to jump the gap.

(2) If the spark plug insulator is broken it may not be a coil problem at all.

(3) If the porcelain insulator on the spark plug has dirt or carbon on it the spark may be following it on the outside of the plug rather than jumping the gap at the end.

I would recommend you get a pro to change your spark plugs on this engine. They can be a problem to remove and reinstall properly and very expensive to repair if not done correctly.

Broken spark plug stuck inside head

Get an easy out from your local hardware store, but soak it with penetrating oil overnight first, worst case you can drill i out and get a spark plug repair thread insert which is available from any full service parts store like NAPA, maybe Kragen, not sure.
