It's time to get a new vehicle. Your other option is to rebuild the engine, including the replacement and resurfacing of your pistons and the cylinder head. If your cat converter is glowing red, that is a very bad sign, and it is likely that you will also need to replace your exhaust system. Now, I am not a volkswagen specific expert, and you can't beat talking to an expert. However, volkwagens are considered a specialty model, and you will pay the price to have it fixed. Happy trails.... :)

sound like defective catalytic. vw had lots of service bulletins about this problem, and actually had recalls on some of them.

- just to add, a flashing check engine light indicates a catalytic failure. if you want a quick way to check it, disconnect the exhaust and see how it runs then. it wont run perfect with the system disconnected, but it will be substantially better then with a plugged cat. you can also do a back pressure test if you have or can borrow the tool to do it. all you do is remove the front 02 and the pressure guage threads into the 02 hole.
