On my 1990 nissan maxima there is a switch that says

This was available on several different makes and model cars. If you select the 'power' position, the car will rev a bit higher before it shifts, kind or a ' performance' setting. The 'comfort' position will shift earlier, and is probably a bit more fuel efficient. The power mode would be good for driving in a hilly terrain area, the comfort on flat terrain and the highway.
