Where is engine control relay 2005 passat j271

remove the plastic plenham chamber cover (at the base of the windscreen). this is the big cover that hides the battery and brake master cylinder. you will see a plastic box. undo all the screws that hold the lid on and reomove. the screw at the back can only be accessed by popping out a small grommet from under the wiper arm.
the engine ECU and the relay that powers it are both in the box, there will also be some fuses here as well.
