My 1997 bmw 318 ti keeps over heating

I changed the water pump rediator and thermostat but my car keeps over heating the water dosent circulate around.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

How do you know the water "dosent" circulate? If its overheating the water is hot. This water would originate in the engine. If Its hot in the radiator, the pump circulated there and it's working.

A bad head gasket, or timing off can also cause the engine to overheat.

As can a faulty temp gauge. Measure the actual temp of the coolant.

Check your hoses see if when runnig they close up,if not loo for vents for letting are out of the system if ther is a air pocket inyour coolant system it willcause the engine to overheat make sure to run the heat when refilling coolant system. if this fails to solve your problem look for a gurgling sound coming from the rad or over flow tank look for this when engine is cold and runnig if you do hear this then you might have a blown head gasket.you can buy a blown headgasket detection kit from your local auto parts store if you do hear or see this symtom.

Change the thermostat and check the radiator hoses. They could be stopped up or could be bent not allowing water flow.

1998 bmw overheating at times has had the waterpump

This is typical of BMW 318 and others I suppose.
If after changing the radiator, the hoses, the water pump then the other cause is leakage of coolant at the back of the engine block.

This is hidden but there is a hard plastic outlet which gives away after 5 or more years. If the leakage is serious you can notice the coolant disappearing very fast.

Worse it could be the gasket leaking.

Bmw316i 1997 car is over heting

make sure your engine cooling fan is working, check to see if your thermostat is staying closed and not allowing circulation in your engine, do this by squeezing the radiator hose when the car is hot, if it is hard to squeeze the thermostat is most likely the issue

Bmw 316i overheating

check if the water is circulating as you might have a blockage in the header tank. this can be checked by opening the radiator cap and check if the water is circulating on top.

check and see if you get water/coolant circulates when you have the cap off (only check from cold start) the original water pump came with a plastic impeller and tends to strip on the shaft also check your thermostat before replacing water pump.
