car was making a whirring noise and got louder and then noise stopped, warning light said check charge system. When car was put in reverse the steering wheel would not turn.

Check alternator brushes, bearings, the driving belt... As per the steering, probably a low-voltage issue...

Hi there.
I think the power steering pump gave up. The fan belt possibly stopped because of the pump and then the system shows no charge to the battery
"check charge system" makes then sense to me.
