Re: Describe your check engine light pontiac grand
The light may not be anything but you need to have the codes read to find out what is going on and what code/s are stored. Some part stores will read the codes for free.

Is the alternator and/or all accessories turning when the engine is running? One may be seized and the belt is sliding across it producing a burning smell.
check for cracked air intake tube. just fixed one on 92 accord. also look for bad vacuum lines. check tube right by throttle where it attaches to motor coming from air cleaner box. if so cut it evenly at the crack and reattach using same hose clamp. hope this helps and good luck
it is not normal for that engine to use that much oil. i know of another grand prix like yours that lost the engine and the dealer had to replace it. something is wrong with that engine. maybe talk to another gm dealer. good luck
this vehicle most likely has a mass air flow sensor it may have got accidently unplugged or the air tube from mass airflow to engine is not connected well or it could be that you have indeed a bad mass air flow sensor they do make a special cleaner that you may want to try before purchasing a mass air flow sensor or purchasing one from salvage yard the symptoms you describe would be created by a bad massair flowsensor
go to a shop and see if there is a code stored in memory. anything else would just be a blind guess. If you are near an Autozone that do a scan for free
O2 Sensor would cause this. A false reading from the o2 sensor will confuse the computer and it WILL act like what you describe. Replace or have checked that sensor.
You might have trouble on your fuel pump motor or on security system (passkey-II)
1.If the car wont start, kindly check the fuel pressure it should be 41-47 PSI
2. Also check the telltail messege of security system it should on for 3-5 seconds only after ignition on.
I have a 2002 grand am and less than a year ago had to replace cadalitic converter. The check engine light would come on once in awhile, and the car will start to bogg down. It started out as intermitent then eventually all the time. The smell may be the heating up of the converter.
