2001 Hyundai Accent
Problem for Hyundai 2001 Accent

Had all my engine belts and a water pump replaced.

Had all my engine belts and a water pump replaced on Friday. Drove the car on Saturday only to have an idler arm go bad. Took it back to the dealer but I have questions as follows:

1) Did I do the car harm driving it in that condition 4 miles or so to the dealer?

2) Shouldn't the service rep have been able to see that the idler arm was in bad shape while he was installing the new drive belt and/or water pump?

3) My service manager speculated that the idler arm might have failed due to the tension put on it by the new (and presumably tighter) drive belt. Is this speculation credible at all?

Probley no harm driving it,and hard to say if he would have noticed the problem, but if it went bad that quick, after he installed the belts, you would think he would have.I assume you are talking about the idler pulley not the idler arm, that would be on the steering.

" Thanks. It was indeed the idler pulley. He is now talking about replacing the tension arm as well. What related items should I insist be looked at? " - smtw26

1) no
2)no, unless you told them to do a full check over they are not going to check every thing. Its not the service rep. that gets his hands dirty. The mechanic who did the work probably had a lot of other cars to fix.And only did as told.
3)no thats impossible. If he said that I would wonder how he got his job. Must be related to the dealer/owner.If he beleaves that he is a ding dong!
