my antifreeze light came on so I pulled into a gas station and bought some universal antifreeze green in color now that I'm home my husband says I should have bought the red stuff. What is the proper color antifreeze for my 1997 lumina car?
I I used the green ethyl glycol for a while until the coolant level kept dropping daily. No leaks on the engine, hoses or ground. Found out that there are plastic parts in the exhaust manifold and ethyl glycol eats them then the engine eats the ethyl glycol. R&R with original plastic parts $850. R&R aftermarket aluminum parts $975. Always always always use the RED coolant (Dexcool)
The Orange antifreeze called GM Dexi cool, (red to your husband LOL). It's ok you put the green antifreeze in. The difference is the Green antifreeze has a of 1 year or 30,000 miles and the Orange has a life expectancy of 5 years or 100,000 miles. Being your Lumina is 12 years old and if the Orange antifreeze has never been flushed out, most likely crystals have formed in the water jackets and passageways through out the cooling system. The crystals can be flushed out with Preston radiator flush, but will take a few flushes to ensure that most of the crystals are out. Once flushed out, replace the antifreeze with the GM Dexi cool 50/50 mix water/antifreeze. Too much water will freeze and can crack the engine block, radiator, or heater core. To much Antifreeze will gel up causing the coolant to flow slower and then the engine tends to over heat. Note, it's a good time to replace the thermostat and spend the extra money for the fail safe thermostat. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to answer any more questions.

97 Lumina...Switch stuck on defrost and floor. Does nothing when changed. Found broken vacuum line behind battery and fixed that. Still same problem. Found the T joint and followed the line back to the firewall and was fine. What else am I missing? Car seems like it doesnt have any vacuum. The heat and cold switch moves with ease when changed back and forth. I thought maybe you could hear the vents shut. Even the rear defroster doesnt work like it used to. Is something up with the switch that changes from vent to floor to dash etc? Or am I missing a vacuum hose under the hood? It does heat up eventually but the switch wont even turn the ac compressor on when switched to max on the switch.

I installed a remote car starter. I was wondering if my 1997 Lumina has a Transponder Anti-Theft System? My key has a "chip" in the shaft of the key. I need to know because a transponder loop has to go on my ignition switch if the car has one. Can't find anything in the owners manual. Thank you for your help. The unit I am installing is a Universal Learning Bypass System. Model #791, JBS Access II Communications. Thanks again, any info. would be helpfull.

1997 Chevrolet Lumina : upper brakelight (window) works, lower brakelights don't work. Changed bulbs and fuse-no go. Most logical theory so far is that they are on seperate circuits, the lower lights run through the turn signal circuitry by the steering wheel. So, do I need to change the multifunctional switch?
