Just received a 2003 Lincoln town car from my grandfather. It has 48000 miles and is a nice car. Had it one week and the check engine light came on. All service was just done before he gave it to us. Any suggestions?
I have the same car and the check engine light is set to turn automatically at 50,000, 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Any mechanic can reset the read and reset the computer. The gas cap has it's own warning. It also could be as simple as a spark plug misfiring, the mechanic can tell you that and shouldn't cost anyting.
If you just put gas in the vehicle it may be as simple as not tightening the gas cap tight enough. This would trip for emissions and cause check engine light to come on. Worth a shot! Tighten the cap and drive see if goes off. Could also be carbon build up blocking the egr valve. Since an older person had the vehicle prior and likely didnt get on the gas much this would build up.

First thing to check in this case is the sensor itself. But one week is a very small time. Any reputable service should check and fix it for free. As I don't know American cars close, I can only give you general advices like to check oil and coolant level. Other common problems are overheating (but you does not sound like it is the temp light), or abnormal oil pressure.

The simplest things can cause the most trouble - I would start with a load test on the battery - may seem to be charged after using a battery charger, but can have plate connection problems causing failure under load.

You have an Oil Pump/worn-engine issue to be looking at...

Sounds like you might have a bad coolant tempurature sensor. Also, I would check to see if the fuel filter has been replaced. Is the check engine light is on?
Next time your engine idle kicks up check for vacuum leaks.
You can do this by opening the hood and spraying a little water at the vacuum hoses and see if the idle drops off. If it does you have a found your leak!
THEY (2-3) are an absolute PAIN to change...try running "SeaFoam" in the tank for 100 miles or so first. Avaialble at Advance Auto Parts $8. follow directions Good Luck
the ecm will cycle all of the sensors in the time that it takes you to put it into gear and start moving
on start up you will see all of the required sensors to be checked in the dash lights and when the lights go off , all the sensors are checked
when running any faulty sensors are checked and if the ECM can self adjust to compensate then it will do so
if not it stores a fault code or puts the engine light on
