Removing/replacing wiper motor in '93 Ford Ranger

Need help removing/replacing wiper motor in '93 Ford Ranger. Cannot get the wipers in the upright position (current motor is dead), and thus cannot access the linkage joints. I don't want to just strong-arm them into the upright position, but I cannot move them without a working motor. I have a working motor ready to be installed, and a Chiltons manual to help, but I cannot go any farther without getting the wiper blades in the upright position. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That helps alot. Now I have a problem disconnecting the linkage. On the underside of the pivot joint (inside the linkage access covers) there is a rubber covering that isn't described in my Chiltons manuel. In my manuel, it says to remove the clip on the back of the joint, but on my truck there is only a rubber stop that i can't remove, not a clip and I'm stuck again.

Ok, finally got it fixed! I was looking in the wrong place for the clip that connects the linkages to the wiper motor. Anyway, just wanted to update you on the progress. One other thing: when reconnecting the linkages to the wiper motor, my Chilton's manual said to put the clip on the right linkage, then connect the left linkage first, followed by the right. Now I'm assuming they"re talking about left and right as you look at the truck from the front. If that is the case, they have it reversed. I had to put the clip on the LEFT linkage, then put the right linkage on, followed by the left. Then you just pull on the left linkage until it snaps on, making sure the little nib on the motor pin is sticking out the top of the clip. And voila! My new wiper motor works like a champ. Thanks for all your help bulldogchief. It helped alot.

You don't have to put the wipers in an upright position You can take the arms completely off. It's very easy to do, when you are looking at the base of the wiper arm, on the side closest to the windshield, at the base, there is a spring-loaded tab. Lift the arm on its hinge to where the arm is now pointing away from the windshield, pull the tab and the wiper arm will slide right off. Now you can access the linkage joints easily. Hope that helps!

Did this work for you? I can explain in more detail if you need it.

Okay, I am going to research it on my own Ranger and I will let you know here...keep checking back, ok? I promise I'm not going to abandon you...I will stay until we get this fixed.

Wow, I am so happy you found it! As far as the Chilton's manual is concerned, they write it up from the view of the driver, so, technically it was written correctly. I do apologize for being away, life happens sometimes, you know? Anyways, I am happy you got it done. Cheers!

Windshield wipers not working

there are little tabs at the end of the arm where it attaches to the wiper trans. if you bend the arms up at the hinge and swing those tabs out the arms will stay up (a small screw driver can be used to move the tabs if they are stuck. A 1/8 screwdriver is a good choice, $4 at sears). once those tabs are out and the arms are holding themselves up just pull. you may need to rock them back and forth a bit but they should just pull off.

To remove the wiper motor itself:
1993 Aerostar/Ranger/Explorer
  1. Turn the wiper switch on. Turn the ignition switch on until the blades are straight up. Then, turn ignition off to keep them there.
  1. Disconnect battery and wiper motor electrical connector.
  1. Remove the right wiper arm and blade.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  1. Remove the right pivot nut and allow the linkage to drop into the cowl.
  1. Remove the linkage access cover, located on the right side of the dash panel near the wiper motor.
  1. Reach through the access cover opening and unsnap the wiper motor clip.
  1. Push the clip away from the linkage until it clears the nib on the crack pin. Then, push the clip off the linkage.
  1. Remove the wiper linkage from motor crank pin.
  1. Remove nut and ground strap.
  1. Remove three attaching nuts from wiper motor. Remove the motor.

Wipers will not park on 93 ford crown victoria

Hmmmm... if you replaced the motor you must have cleaned the area housing the arm mechanism. I had the same problem and found the problem to be in the arm assembly box on the firewall. Under the hood, triangular shaped box with snap on top was full of dirt, leaves and pine needles... I removed all the **** & my wipers now park as they should!!
