Depending on the year , make , and model you have, most HVAC systems have a blower motor fan resister, usually located near the blower motor, check for power and ground at the fan resistor plug connector and make sure all connectors are in good shape, and not melted, or you will have to replace the fan resister pig tail as well.
What you describe points to the blower resistor.
Search by year, make and model of your car for the location of it. More than likely under the passenger side glove box area.
Check the power going to the blower motor resistor located on passenger side of cab mounted on the heat duct with 2 screws.Also look for melted pigtail on the resistor they get hot and loose there connection.
This may be just a blower motor (a/c fan) resistor issue. This resistor, depending on your vehicle is usually located near the blower motor. Remove the blower motor to locate it. This resistor controls fan speed, when they fail some or all fan speed may not work.
Your blower speed resistor has gone bad and needs to be replaced. You can pick one up at Auto Zone or Parts Source with the step by step instructions to getting the resistor replaced with common tools.
It is located under the glove box, way in the back of the passenger
foot area. You'll need to remove 2 screws with a 7mm socket, and remove
the plastic cover that covers the blower motor and another component
box that I think controls the passenger airbag. After removing the
plastic cover you'll need to side that passenger airbag module to the
right so it pop off its mounting bracket and move it out of the way.
That will give a better view of the blower motor. I highly recommend you
also remove the blower motor itself because the Blower Motor Resistor
is located behind it. I think you'll need a 5mm or 5.5mm socket to
remove the 3 screws that hold in place the blower motor and 2 more
screws for the Blower Motor Resistor... It's a cramped location to work
in but if you have all the tools and enough lighting then it shouldn't
take more than 30-60 minutes to do. The Blower Motor Resistor costs
about $19-$25. Good luck
my 06 h3 just had same problem, the motor control resistor pack was bad, located under glove box, mounted inside ac duct, large connector and two screws will remove it.
mine had burnt spot on connector,cleaned connector terminals and installed new pack, works fine now. I found your problem while looking for another elec problem i'm having.
The blower motor resister is located next to the fan under the passenger side dash. You will have to remove the glove box and plastic cover under the dash to expose the blower motor. the resister is next to the blower motor.
Check the fan's resistor (behind the glove box) and its connections to the fan and power source! You can easily do this yourself.
My 03 Civic LX (sedan) was doing the same thing ~6 mos. ago (no fan, a/c wasn't clicking on/off, nuthin). The dealer SWORE (almost with his job) that it was one or both of the 2 control boards in the dash (one has 3 potentiometers aka variable resistors, the other has 3 on/off contact switches) and would cost ~$200 each.
It turns out that both were good, and the culprit was the fan's resistor (~$60) had burnt up. I would first check the fan and its resistor for a loose connection before bringing it to a mechanic.
Open the glove box, remove 2 pins on either side of the glove box, then let it hang fully open. On my sedan I had to remove the a/c filter box to get to the fan.
