On my '98 Contour it is actually under the hood underneath the breather hose. It is a triangular shaped black piece with wires leading down to the transmission. There is a little white dial like piece on top with markings for drive and a line that marks the neutral position for the transmission. Supposed to be held on by two 8 mm bolts. These must be on the underside as they were not readily visable.

SOURCE: neutral safety switch

It is located on the side of the transmission, follow the shift cable down to it you will recognize it because it has a electrical wire comming off it and either a shift lever or shift cable going to it.

Transmission jumping and over drive light flashing ford contour 1996

If the fluid is full, it's most likely time to replace the transmission. How many miles are on the car? If you keep driving it like that, you will find yourself on the side of the road soon.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is going bad. Next time it does this to you with the engine off and the selector in neutral pop the clutch by pushing it down all the way then letting your foot slide off to the side so it's pops up and then see if you can start it. If this works you need to adjust the clutch and or replace the neutral safety switch on the transmission.

These are the items in the starting system to check out:
Ignition switch, Battery cables( even the one off the starter ) neutral safety switch , starter relay. Make sure the battery you have is the correct one for your vehicle. Use owners manual it will tell you cold cranking amps (CCA) your vehicle requires.
I would focus on battery, cables and ignition switch it that order.

My car keeps cutting out and has died a couple of times. now when i go to put it in drive it sometimes grinds or it will just sit there and the o/d off light flashes. i've changed the fuel filter.

transmission range sensor at Ford!! called safety neutral switch at auto parts stores and is the same thing... The check engine light finally came on on mine, after cutting out intermittently for a while; the code was P0708... Mine is a '98 Contour and from what I see is in a similar place...to the left of the battery sitting on top of the transmission with a wire plugging into it. The generic "safety neutral switch" looks a little different in that it is not as much as a "diamond shape" as the original Ford part... but other than that the rest looks the same. I've read on other sites about the O/D light flashing with this problem, too, sometimes.

Code 0708 in Ford Contour 1997

Trouble code P0708 means:Transmission range sensor circuit high input .
Other words the "neutral safety switch". it may have gone bad or the wire harness is damaged. It's mounted on top of the transmission where the gear selector cable connects to the transmission. Good luck and hope this helps.
