You must first establish where the fuel filter is located. Generally it will be located somewhere between the fuel tank and the fuel pump in diesel engines or the carburettor in petrol engines. There are two main types.
One is a simple type inline filter where the fuel line is cut and ends of the fuel line pushed over each side of the filter. The line ends may be secured in place by jubilee clips or some other type of clamps. When you locate the filter remove the fuel lines from each side and fit the new one. Note any arrows on the filter that indicate the direction of fuel flow and be sure to have arrow going in the same direction.
The other type of fuel filter is located in a housing somewhere along the fuel line. The top of the housing may be held in place by bolts or it may simply screw off. Gain access to the housing and take out the old filter and pop in a new one. When putting the housing back together make sure that any rubber seals are seated correctly to stop leaks.
When you have the new filter fitted you may have to crank the engine for longer than usual to allow the fuel to fill the new filter. Some engines may have a hand priming bulb located along the fuel line that allows you to pump fuel manually. There may also be a bleed screw that you can open to allow the air to escape and fuel to get in. Beware of leaking fuel that could ignite if it comes in contact with a hot engine.
