Could be anything from a bad plug, to a bad spark plug cable, to a bad distributor cap, rotor, etc. The #4 plug not firing right is the symptom, not the problem more than likely. The down-shifting is probably the computer trying to compensate for the loss of power since it's not firing one of the cylinders. The back fire is because there is no spark to set off the fuel going into the cylinder.

omg you have a broken lead replace them all and all spark plugs problem solved make sure you replace one at a time take one off replace it then go to the next one and so one this is the most eaiest way to do so you wont get the fireing order mixed up
