The very first thing to do is to make sure that you have the key in the "off position." A common mistake is turning the key too far, and you can tell this is the case if you can still play the radio but the car is off and you can't remove the key. Likewise, you want to make sure that your car is in park. Automatic cars won't let you remove the key if it is in any position except park. Jiggle the Wheel
The next step would be to move your steering wheel gently back and forth while you try to take the key out. At times, the steering wheel position locks the ignition, so simply turning the wheel may let you take your key out of the ignition. Check the Battery
Depending on your car, your Key Stuck in the Ignition if the battery is dead. If this is the case, don't try to remove the key until the battery is at least partially charged. Use a Bobby Pin
If you have tried all of the other options and nothing works, you can get creative with household objects. Sometimes pulling the key out with a pair of pliers will work, but never jerk it side to side, as this can lead to it breaking and even worse problems. If you have a bobby pin or similar object handy, you can take off the small cap that covers the access port for the ignition lock override and press it lightly with the bobby pin. Try to Loosen It
Sometimes loosening the key with something like electrical lube or silicone spray will also help do the trick and get your key free. Once again, be careful so the key doesn't break off in the ignition.
Make sure transmission is in Park. Key will not come out until ignition is fully off and ignition will not turn fully off until gear selector is in park
Make sure that car is in the "park" position when you try to remove key. Press brake when moving from gear to the park position and make sure that even if the park is selected - that the car is actually in park. There should also be a bypass switch that is located somewhere close to your gear selector (check manual). Long term fix - take it either to dealer or mechanic.
if your key is a transonder key wich has chip in it give it a couple of minutes to reset the code keep key in ignition and wait to see if it reads key or try another key and see if you have sameproblem make sure you unlock steering wheel disconnecting batteryfor posts might have reset car computer and cannot read ur key...
If you have an auto trans, check to make sure the car is in park. If the shift lever is even slightly misaligned, (even though the indicator says PARK) your key won't come out. Try spraying the tumbler with powdered graphite. It is a common problem, and I found two possible answers. The ignition plunger in the ignition switch or the Park release solenoid located in the center console. I've heard that when the solenoid sticks it prevents your key from being released. I have not fixed mine yet, I just use the inside of a ball point pen to release the plunger by sticking it in the access hole under the ignition.
push key in turn on and off push key in work switch off and on .if dont release you probably going to have to take out the ignition switch. make sure your car is all the way in park.
while in park, press shifter firmly even farther above park. Hold shifter and turn key. The linkage may need adjusting. If this does not help the situation, then the pins inside the ignition are not getting pressed down because key is getting worn. You can try to tap around the ignition lightly with hammer to shake the pins loose.
If the ignition is stuck in the ON position but wont trun off or to the start position the ignition will need to be removed repaired or replaced. LOCKED OUT LOST KEYS [email protected]
