During a recent trip, my r/rear brake on my 04 avalanche was extremely heated (hot brake smell, hot rims etc) . On the return trip I watched closely and there was no problem. What could have caused this issue.

riding the brakes...parking brake partially on..something stuck such as road debris...thanks and have a great day

It could be a dirt on the brake drum causing it to overheat. However, have it checked and balanced.
You life defend on good brakes when driving a car.
