timming belt routing on 2002 montero xlt 3.5 engine vin code R 6g74
This car came in to me with the complaint that it starts fine cold but after it warms up the engine turns over a few times then locks-turn the
key off-turn the key on again engine will crank -lock-will not start. After the engine totaly cools off it will start and run fine intill it is turned off.
Engine lite was on-code for crank sensor and cam sensor were both set.The customer also said that they had another mechinic work on it and he had installed a new timming belt and a new sensor.I in the check out cleared all codes the cam sensor code came back.I have torn it down.I found no cam sensor - the timming belt is new but it is either 1 tooth off on right side cam or it is 10 teeth off on right side cam.
I have looked it up several differnt ways.I cant belive the engine ,if it was10 teeth off has'nt eaten it's self.

- Reply:Island66 Thanks for your prompt e mail.So you know how my confusion started.I added a new timming belt tech book to my shelf-2009 AUTODATA TECH SERIES.I looked up 2002 Montero 3.5L- Page#700-It gives the cam positions as:cam 1 at 11:30 and cam 2 at 10:00 which makes cam 2- 1 tooth off. Then I looked up in my Mitchel repair information about the cam and the crank sensors-I then found a timming belt alinement that put :cam 1 at 11:30 and cam 2 at 12:00. Then I went back to my new book and found another listing on page #654 2002 Montero 3.5L vin R 6g74 engine with the same alilement as Mitchel. Then confusion set in. I at this point am going to assume that page # 700 is correct, meaning that the belt is 1 tooth off-adjust it and turn it by hand to make sure valves are OK. Thanks for listning-Island66

I don't have the diagram handy at the moment, but the cam positions are set by lining up the marks onthe cam gears with the V cuts in the valve covers. You are correct that the cam position sensor is your problem. It is located on the BACK of the driver side cylinder head, and is accessible from the top. THe connector is a pain to get off, but otherwise it is easily accessible, just sit up on the core support to gain access.

The Marks are different (ie 12oclock/11:30 or so) as pictured here. I will post again if it is too small to read (sometimes fixya shrinks pictures)
