I would say it is a problem with the shift interlock.
The truck should have never come out of park without using the brake pedal. If it did, and the brake lamps worked correctly, chances are the shift interlock solenoid is the problem.
Quick test, with the engine off, turn the key to the run position ( do not start ), press the brake pedal and put into neutral.
If this works correctly, the shift interlock is the problem. Start with checking the fuse.

Do I require the fuel tank sending unit wrench number 310-123 in order to remove/install the fuel pump sending unit on a 2002 F150. Can a brass (non-sparking) punch be used instead? If the wrench is a definite requirement, where do I get one?
