The shift solenoid is what changes the gears in a gm auto tranny. To change it you just need to drop the tranny pan and remove the filter. You'll see a plug with to wires attached to a plastic and metel piece. Remove the plug and the soleniod just pulls out. If you order the part first(about $25) you'll be able to recognize the old one when you drop the pan. You may as well just buy a filter kit while you at it(about $20). It comes with the filter and a new pan gasket which you will need anyway.
