your output seal on the tranny or input seal on your transfer case is bad. you have to pull your transfer case to tell. this is a pretty straight forward job. block wheels. put transfer case in neutral. drop front and rear drive lines.diconnect transfer case shift linkage. there is a short commponent connecting the trans to the transfer case. the bolt on either end face each other. remove the bolts to the transmission. the transfer case is heavier than it looks, i suggest getting help. pull back on the transfer case until it will drop down. it will pull out a bit because of the trans output shaft. replace what will probibly turn out to be the tranny output shaft seal and reassemble in reverse order.

i have an 88 ford bronco 2 4x4. 2.9 L. 5-speed. when its cold its very difficult to get into reverse. It was grinding some but would finally go into gear. Then when i'd go to put it in 1st and drive, same thing...difficult to get into gear and was grinding some. Yesterday this problem became much much worse. after letting it warm up, It was really difficult to get it into reverse to back up. and was grinding really bad. Finally went in. Started down the road and realized it was not wanting to shift through the gears...kept having to double clutch it. very difficult to work gears. felt like it was hanging up....The grinding noise became really bad. and now my clutch feels soft. I had the throwout bearing replaced and some other transmission work done about 7 yrs ago...cost was about 1400.00 ouch. Where to start? Thanks!

1989 bronco II won't shift into 4 wheel drive, stopped or moving. I have located the reset button on a black box behind the drivers seat in the kick panel . After pushing button, a red light on the box comes on for a while then goes off. When I push the dash board button for low gear the led light flashes on and off a few times and then stays off. The led button on the 4 wheel drive button won't go off once turned on until I turn the truck off and then start the truck again. Help me Mr. Wizard!
