Vauxhall vectra 2.0 1999 overheating

I have been told that my head gasget neads replacing on my VAUXHALL VECTRA 2.0 1999 petrol manuel. The engine is getting hot and the top hosepipe is squirting water when hot. The rad is hot throughout which rules out the thermostat, if so I intend to take the head off myself to do the repair OHC, what precautions do I need to take also, what are the sequence and torque settings when putting the head back.

PLEASE NOTE VAUXHALL VECTRA IS NOT LISTED, I HAVE USED A DIFFERENT MAKE AND MODEL JUST TO GET LISTED. SO PLEASE IGNORE. MY CAR IS A VAUXHALL VECTRA 2.0 1999 PETROL MANUEL IS THE INFORMATION I REQUIRE
thanks. M

- Hi there My engine gets really hot but does not go on the red stays between 80 and 90 degress. There is no sludge/gunge on the oil filler cap or water on the dipstick. The car does run very nicely but, sitting in traffic my temp gauge goes high very quickly. The top hosepipe goes to boiling point then the water forces it way through the top hose. I have to top up with water every so often depending on how far I go. The garage have told me that the head gasket has blown and going to cost over £400 to repair. Hope this helps you a little more. Thanks. makzy

I was told it is not the thermostat because the whole of the radiator gets hot, if the thermo was not working then only half the rad would be hot. The garage have told me that the head gasket has blown and going to cost over £400 to repair. Hope this helps you a little more. Thanks. makzy PS. I am just about to make a start on my car but will wait awhile for your answer.

Get a second opinion...... does not sound like a blown head gasket to me.

OK , 80 - 90 is normal. Car runs good while driving but overheats when sitting in traffic. This tells me that there is nothing wrong with your engine. the problem is that when you come to a stop , there is no longer air flow through the radiator , and the engine overheats. When you stop , the cooling fans should eventually take over to provide air flow for the Rad. Sounds like just the sensor in the rad , or the cooling fan is shot. As for your head gasket..... It may be blown due to the overheating but it might be ok. If It was blown , you would probably see lots of steam coming out the tail pipe , or oil in your coolant , or coolant in your oil.

- Oh ya , 1 more thing. If you have been topping up with just water for a while , you will have diluted your coolant to the point where it will boil at a very low temprature. Coolant ( antifreeze ) lowers the freezing point , but also raises the boiling temp. Remember , your engine runs at 90 , water boils at 100.
