I failed my vehicle inspection and was told the problem was a BBCatalyst system efficiency below threshold- bank 1. i bought the part at auto zone. my question is,
where is the catalyst system bank 1 on my 03 Jetta VW engine?
Without knowing what your codes were it's gonna be hard to tell exactly what's wrong. I assume this isn't a TDI? According to your description the problem is more than likely your O2 sensor (oxygen sensor). "Bank 1" tells me it's the one BEFORE the catalytic converter. You have two - so it's the one towards the front of the car.

Last week, my ESP light came on in my 2003 jetta 1.8t. i regularly used my traction control to compensate for the icy roads here, and last tuesday i noticed it was on when i started the car( normally it reverts to off when the car is shut off) and when i went to press it it wouldnt turn off. i also noticed i slipped around quite a bit more. after checking online in a jetta forum, i discovered i no longer have traction control, but the cause of the problem was still unknown.however, i received a few ideas to what it is. The MAF, the wheel speed sensor, or possibly the ABS. after talking to my '' car guy'' he told me its least likely to be the MAF, seeing as theres no difference in my mileage or the actual performance of the car. And i dont know what to look for in the ABS, as my brakes seem to work fine. any suggestions as to what the problem could be? thank you

I have a 2003 1.8T Jetta and I just recently noticed that the exhaust dropped lower than where they should be as if the exhaust is falling off. Since I have noticed this there has been a creaking noise on the driver side and it does it when I take turns at a slower speed. But this noise seems to only occur when I make the first few turns. Also there is a cover of some kind under the car that has been cracked off and hanging down on by the same wheel ever since I bought the car. Could that be the reasons for the sudden noise?

We are having issues again with the 2003 tdi automatic. If you need to put your foot into the paddle and are only in first gear it will go into the starvations mode. You then have to pull over and shut it off and then let it reset the computer. Once you restart you have to pamper it through 1 and 2nd gear and then you are ok. If going up a hill you will loose up to 10 miles per hour. On the way home the husband was driving the car and could only do 45 in a 75 zone. Car thourgh a code and he did not write down but decided to pull the air filter and the car ran like a bat out hell. We replaced the filter and the problem is not as bad but still have to pamper the car through the first few gears. Help
