I failed my vehicle inspection and was told the problem was a BBCatalyst system efficiency below threshold- bank 1. i bought the part at auto zone. my question is,
where is the catalyst system bank 1 on my 03 Jetta VW engine?
Without knowing what your codes were it's gonna be hard to tell exactly what's wrong. I assume this isn't a TDI?
According to your description the problem is more than likely your O2 sensor (oxygen sensor). "Bank 1" tells me it's the one BEFORE the catalytic converter. You have two - so it's the one towards the front of the car.
hi,my friend, you can try,
Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
Replace the catalytic converter
