Problem for Chevrolet 2000 Impala

The dash lights go out when the headlights turn

the dash lights go out when the headlights turn on (when it is dark outside). the dash lights work fine when the daytime running lights are on (when it's light out. The sensor on the dash seems to work fine under changing light conditions, turning the headlights on and off.
This condition is on a 2000 Impala.
