As long as there is no issue with the pressure plate/clutch being completely released when pressing fully on the clutch pedal, it could be that your shifter forks are bent just a bit causing it to have an alignment problem. This happens after years of "slamming gears", even when done gently:)
The grinding would be caused by the synchro being worn or just part of being out of line because of the shifting fork.
The forks can be removed fairly easily and straightened, hopefully the grinding will stop, if not then a rebuild would be next in line.
check the operation of the clutch. If it is cable operated then the cable needs replacing as it is jammed and holding the clutch pressure plate off If hydraulic then it may be the clutch master cylinder has a blockage in the compensating port which is holding the pressure plate off. Have these items checked out and if they are operational the it will be a clutch kit replacement job. Have it checked out by an accredited clutch and brake shop before you spend big money.
Try to double clutch when you downshift from 2nd to 1st ( while driving be in 2nd put in the clutch go to neutral pull out clutch rev it a lil and put the clutch back in and then shift to first) what this does is that it aligns the gears and it might go into 1st alot smoother. Happened to my 86 Toyota and never had problem with it after that
two quick questions, did you recently have your transmission or clutch repaired? and have you checked the fluid level in the transaxle?
common issues like this could be a faulty transaxle, clutch disc, release lever and bearing, not assembled correctly, faulty pressure plate, or lock pin missing. I hope the fluid level is the issue, good luck!
Either your clutch plate is warped through a lot of work, starting/stopping/then pulling away again, or your thrust bearing is going ( to test for this, take out of gear, listen for a rumble, it may not be evident to the ear, if not then depress the clutch peddle and any rumble will noteicably dissapear).
I would bet it is a warped clutch plate u which will will require removal
Sounds like the pressure plate! Try this, rev the engine for a sec then when it starts to slows down try to put it in reverse - if the gears grind, its the pressure plate which will come with the clutch kit for about 125-175.00.
