IT sounds like the transmission has failed. Check the fuse in the fuse box and look to see if the fuse to the transmission has blown. Check the transmission fluid level and condition of the fluid, what you described sounds like the Torque Converter did not unlock and now will not lock up. Most likely it's going to be a electrical problem since you only have 42K miles on it un-less you have been running it hard and may have broke something mechanical. Good luck and keep me posted.

Check Trans Fluid, if smells burnt & colored dark brown or black, Transmission is probably Toast. Check the CV Axles to make sure one didn't pop loose. A single axle gone will cause remaining axle to remain still as Transmission gears spin freely.

REPUTABLE shop or Dealer

At a guess around $2k for a Dealer Trans Asy.

What could be causing my car to shudder or shake intermittently when it is in gear?

Have someone check your transmission fluid level. Probably low, so the shifting up and down is compromised.

Car is stuck in park with no previous problems

ok i believe that the car wont move into gear without your foot on the brake if you have your foot on the brake and it still wont move then there is a problem with the sensor should be behind the brake pedal. if thats ok then there is a shift lock next to the gear shifter inside the center console there should be a way of disengaging that for service purposes but i wouldnt do it for any other purpose because it is a safety feature to stop you from starting the car in drive or reverse but it should get you to the shop for repair.

When starting out from a stop, the car (cvt) shudders for a second or two while the car is accelerating. Is there any friction modifiers that can be added to the trans fluid other than Honda's $15/quart...

it sounds like you have worn engine or transmission mounts. if it was friction from the transmission it would happen anytime you accelerate, not just from a stop. place rubber or wood stops in front and behind the front wheels, pull the e-brake. now have someone hold the brake pedal and start the car. have them put the car in gear and rev the engine, making sure the car doesnt move. while revving the engine, look at the position of the engine and how much it shifts around from its initial position. excessive movement of the engine indicates a worn or loose mount. this will also affect acceleration from a stop. what you are experiencing is the weight of the car catching up with movement of the engine. once they come together, the shuddering stops.

Have a chevy impala 2000 with 3800 in it. the tranny has been shifting hard off the stop. If you gradually depress gas pedal then there is no problem with shifting in any gears, but when yor at a stop, and...

You seem to be on the right track. You should replace the PWM solinoid also, that is the most likly cause for the conern. Make sure the valves move good also, high milage may end up needing a valve body due to sticking valves.
Make sure to check your mounts also, that could be the banging you feel.
Also there should be a code in the pcm if it is banging as hard as you say, p1811 is the most common, but that usally has a shudder also.

Car hesitates/stalls when engine is warm and car starts to move.

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.

Transmission feels like it slips on take off.

Agreed. I had the same problem, transmission would lag between 1st and 2nd, and it would **** violently sometimes from a stop. Anyway, they had to rebuild the transmission. I'm not sure how much it would be as I only paid deductible from warranty ($100.00) but they kept saying average rebuild price on 2003 impala is about $1,200-$1,500.
