I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 175,000 miles on it. I think it is in great condition. Recently (well probably over the course of time) the AC Compressor has been wearing out and the bearings are becoming shot. So, when the car is running or in any a/c, heat, or fan mode it has a loud chirping noise that sounds like the belt is slipping.
It has a serpentine belt, which is just the one belt connected to everything. I took it into the shop which basically said they I would have to replace the entire a/c compressor and system. ($$$$!!!)
I can do without the A/C. I found a "A/C Compressor Bypass Pulley" online. Anyone have any experience with this? or A/C compressor bypass pulleys in general??
Easy to install? If the a/c comp. bypass pulley is install the a/c becomes NA correct?
Any help, ideas, or advice you can provide would be much appreciated! Thanks!

- Thanks! I think the spring loaded tensioner is in good shape. I just had the serpentine belt replaced less than 3000 miles ago and all checked out just fine.
I think my plan is just to keep it through the winter time and start looking for another vehicle in the spring. The bypass pulley will probably work out just fine.
The ones i am looking at seem to say that the bracket and bolts for the current a/c compressor will work just fine during installation. Is it an easy installation, or should I have something like this taken to the shop once I purchase the bypass pulley??
Once again, thanks for the help.

Before all this.Check the spring loaded tensioner hasn't seized. If the chirping sound IS the a/c comp. and the bypass pulley is on,yes, the a/c is out of the picture.Plan B might be to get a comp. from a wreckers yard.1/4 the price???Hope this helps you

- You will still have the aircon gas lines to think about. If you are going to sell the car,is it good to still have the air con or not?Me! I am in aussie.Aircon is a good thing. If you get rid of it,wrap and save all parts. Its not a hard job to do.About 2 hours. You virtually swap this bit for that bit.I hope this helps you
