every once in a while when i try to start my car .. when i turn the key i get a big clunk and everything goes dead in the car.. interiors lights and everything are dead.. then i wait a few minutes or if i just touch the battery or shake the car the lights come back on.. then i turn the key and it starts right up.. i changed my alternator a few months ago( had it tested and was advised bad alternator and battery was ok) need help.. not sure if its a short or something.. happens about once or twice a month.. the interior lights kinda pulse when driving a little..
Several things. Take the car to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. Before you go, check the starter and starter cables under the car. Have them check starter draw. Have them check the battery and alternator.
It sounds like the alternator is not quite filtering out the electric pulses it creates when working. The starter can ground out but usually not after you are moving.
If the gauges do not indicate anything, do a wiggle test to see if you can find the short.

I have a 1995 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L, 5 speed manual. I have a problem where sometimes the car will not start so I let it sit for awhile and it may or may not start again, I guess it depends on its mood. The car even will shut off while in motion but will usually fire back up on its own. I took it in for a diagnostic and had the fuel pump replaced (Feb 2009) which worked for awhile until the car started back to its old tricks. I have pulled the following codes from the OBD I - 53 (TP sensor above max circuit - replaced TP sensor already), 95 (fuel pump secondary circuit failure - PCM to ground) and 39 (automatic overdrive not operating properly). The last tune up was not too long ago and the fuel filter has been recently replaced. The MAF was also replaced maybe 5 years ago.
