Overheats in traffic. The heater lows cold air too. Does it still mean the thermostat must be changed or can this be caused by other elements?

- hey c17hydro, many thank for your quick help and response. I just went over it again. I filled the expansion tank with water to the top and refilled it while on to make sure I have full tank. I put the heater on high and turned the fan speed high. It was cold. I started the car, and it took a while to warm up. The upper hose was in half-inflated position at the begining. it took a while to warm up. I kept squeezing the hose every minute or two and after a while I felt some pressure was built up. The heater was blowing cold air. After squeezing the upper hose a few times, the heater was blowing somewhat warmer cool air but not hot air. Could squeezing the upper hose (which comes from top of thermostat) have pushed some hot water through causing the somewhat warmer cool air to blow? Then, on the up-hill driveway I rolled the car a few yards down and put it in drive to give it a little load going up-hill and mimic heavy traffic condition. While the temperature was under 120, it began to steam, but very little, again from the driver corner under-hood. The upper hose was hotter, fully inflated but not very hard, it could still be squeezed. Many thanks!

It can be a couple of things....first one is easy.

1. Low engine coolant level. Just remove the cap on the readiator (engine cold) and check the level of your antifreeze. If it is low, replentish it. This could be your problem.

2. Water pump has failed internally. Easy way to check, start your Benz, squeeze the radiator hose while it is running. Better to do this when the engine is cold. If you start to feel pressure in the upper hose, water pump may still be good. Should feel like rushing water going through the hose.

3. Thermostat. Could be a bad thermostat. If you run the heater and there is no heat but you have air flow...could be the thermostat. Bad air blend door actuator could do this also.

Hope this gives you a starting point!

- Bad thermostat. Here's a quick explanation:

A failing thermostat can cause several other issues that you may notice before the problem is reflected in the temperature gauge. Since a failing thermostat can cause an engine to run too hot, you may notice diminished gas mileage. If you're running your car's heater and notice that the air is slow to heat up or never heats up, this is another sign of thermostat failure.

it is possible but not likely. it would seem to me that your radiator is low(probable leak) and the reason the heater blows cold is that there is no hot water to blow air over. check your resevoir and fill to the proper level. it will take some bleeding im sure so start cold, fill, leave cap off, and run. allow to warm while safely checking level. once vehicle has reached operating temperature and resevoir is full, allow to run and see if the fans are "kicking" on. you have a very special vehicle. take care of it. email me at iambanshee74@yahoo.com
