Egr valve chevy lumina '97 3.1 lumina ,i pulled the egr there was a white greasey substance in it as well as well as the passages to the throttle body and and exhaust, what is it,where did it come...

that sounds as if your engine breather system requires cleaning, the substance is emulsified oil, normally caused by poor oil, lack of oil changes, or possibly head gasket problems, clean out all the breather hoses, filter etc, run engine until warm, drain engine oil and refill with a good quality oil, renew oil filter and then run and check again after a few miles

How do i replace my spark plug wires in the rear of my 97 chevy lumina? do i have to take the engine mounts off and pull it back?

You have to remove the torque strut, at top and
your front/radiator side and either pry the engine
to the front of car or buy the tool that goes into the
strut mount for that purpose. It draws the engine away
from firewall

My 97 chevy lumina had a lifter ticking I changed oil now sounds like all of them are tapping like crazy. it has oil light so I dont know how much oil pressure it has light goes off when started.

did you use an engine flushing agent ? if not try one, also you should be using a 10/40 semi synthetic oil for the age of car, then after refilling take revs upto 3000 for about 30 secs,(when hot)if that dont cure it then start looking at oil pump(more costly last)

How do I replace the timing chain and gears on my 97 chevy lumina, engine is 3.1L.

Remove the balancer, alternator, P/S pump and belt tensioner. Remove the front cover and then the chain. If the chain has jumped, the 3.1 is an interference motor.

I have a knocking noise at idle in my 97 Chevy Lumina...It goes away when I accelerate. What could this be?

after oil change' check oil pressure cold and then hot , then idle, if it goes up when reving it hot, thats good sort of,then if it goes way to low at idle and knocks, check idle speed. Fix it if so, still there , in the old days we would be cheap and put in a high flow oil pump, now I drive the "siht" out of a cheap car to see how long they last! It will supruse you> seen a 97 lumina with 400,000 km. slight knock and still going.

My daughter has 1995 Chevy Lumina with a 425 engine (?) that leaks oil. The intake valve has been replaced and it still leaks oil. The mechanic says he can't place the origin of the leak because the...

I had a '93 Chevy Lumina (sedan) with the 3.1L V6, and it was also leaking oil badly enough to coat the underside of the car with an oily sheen. A mechanic pointed me in the right direction. There is no distributor on this car, but there is a blank-off plate installed where the distributor used to be. The oil pump drive shaft runs off a gear meshed with the cam under this plate, which is also what the distributor used to be driven from. All I had to do was remove the plate, replace the gasket fitted between the plate and the opening, and oil could no longer seep through there. As I remember, I had to remove the air horn from the intake plenum to get at this plate. Hope this helps.
