temp guage not registering, guage appears to not working,is it the guage or the sensor

Probably the sensor. I think you can test by removing the wire to the sensor and shorting to ground (with the ignition on). I believe it will show HOT when the wire is grounded. Perhaps an auto parts store can test the sensor if you take it in, or just get a new one to try. I doubt they're very expensive.
