How old is the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS)? The CTS have been
know to fail, don't rule it out. After that, there's the thermostat and
possible water pump. The pump would be your last choice since you did not say
it was over heating and the effort required to replacing it. Go with the
sensor first, it is a 2 part sensor, and apparently the half sending
signal to ECU isn't working correctly according to the ECU.
Replaced the sensor ($43 from my local VW
dealer: ouch.) Once you the parts in hand, and the engine was cool
enough, it takes all of two minutes (less time than it takes you to
replace one of the windshield wiper's rubber; who designed that damn
thing????). Then replace the Thermostat 190F and cleared the check engine light.
Good luck and this should solve your P2181 Issues.

my car was running fine, I went in the house for a half an hour now it won't start; not even a crank... Lights, wipers, alarm works so I don't think it's the battery. What's the problem?

i need a diagram for a 2003 passat coolant tank. There is a slow drip from the bottom of it and it appears that there is supposed to be a hose hooked up to it but I do not see any hoses that don't have a home. Is there a plug that maybe came off?
