My 2001 Olds Aurora heater sticks Converts to the position of vent and floor and you can't get it out. When this happens, you can not adjust the position, turn off the air conditioning, turn on the rear defog. Very difficult to even change the temperature. If you get it to unstick, then everything works great. Sometimes for days, sometimes only for minutes

Could be the "auto" button for the control sticks in. You should be able to feel this when you press it. If it feels like it doesn't have the same feel at the fan speed, this might be it. You could try removing the knob and using some 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean it.
If that doesn't work, I would try a used heater control module and see if that fixed it. SHould be able to get one off eBay. It's fairly easy to put in.
