First check to make sure gas cap is on tight. (yes I know, sounds stupid but it's a possibility) If that doesn't cure light, stop into any good parts store like autozone, Advance, etc and have them do a FREE fault scan, they run the scan give you a print out and reset your lights. If light comes back on you HAVE an issue.
If the check engine light stays on than the computer has detected a fault. There will be a code stored in the computers memory. Have the computer scanned to identify the trouble code. Once you know what the code is the possibilities will be narrowed down.
You need to have somebody pull the code from the system while the light is on. Most local parts stores will do this for free. Once you get the code it will give you a direction as to what is going on with your truck. Computers can set codes for 1000's of reasons, and without knowing the code you have no idea what problems it is seeing.
If the tapping noise speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
If the service light is on, change oil and filter, if tapping is still there, the lifter is the culprit.
