the ticking noise your hearing is the mixture control solenoid from your carb and its perfectly normal. It should go for 25 seconds when key is on and engine not running. When engine is running you should hear it all the time. If you dont hear it when engine is running then you have a problem
Yes this is definitely due to timing or plugs. First check the timing belt. It could be loose and needs to be tightened. If timing belt is OK remove each plug & check that the gaps of all the plugs are the same & that there are no oil deposit at the ends. If the plugs spark points are worn out, replace the plugs.
