I dont know if it works the same, but I drive a 2006 Mitsu Lancer Ralliart. When you push the recirc air button, a little motor closes a little gate that blocks outside air and pulls the air from the interior instead. The blower motor is located behind the glovebox. It is secured by a couple screws. I guess its possible that a foreign object such as a leaf or something is touching the blower motor and causing the noise.
