How can i reset the check engin light on a 05 dakota

when they plug in the obd 2 scanner to read the codes, the scanner also has a function to clear them and reset the check engine light

Sometimes that light means overfill oil
Sometimes after changing oil if they put too much that happens
Check the oil level on cold in level place (give it like an hour or so) for the light to reset
If after that the light still on take it to a tech.

Check engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

I think that's one of the o2 sensor. But try unhooking ur battery terminals for five to ten minutes and see if that doesn't reset it.

Go to AutoZone have them put it on there computer and clear the code....its FREE

You need an OBD1 Scan Tool

Most auto parts stores offer free reading and resets of engine lights. Just call a local parts store and see is they have the capabilities and they will tell you what turned the light on. Premium gas should not cause a check engine light but not tightening the gas cap enough will.

take the postive side off the battery for about 3-seconds and put back on if the light comes back on and you have a autozone near you they will check it for free so you know what else you have to do to repair you truck wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

First answer made by an idiot, don't answer unless you know something!. The answer is not in your owners manual. A Chrysler diagnosis machine is required to reset the light in a 1989 or later Dakota. Prior to that there is a little blue control box mounted above the e-brake that you take loose after removing the dash cover. Poke a pencil into the small reset hole on the side while the truck is running and your light will go out. Your dealer will do it for about $140!
