All of a sudden I have lost power steering and brakes on my 96 Chev Astro. I checked the serpentine belt and it is functional. Is there a fuse that could have gone bad that would cause this? I am thinking the problem may be connected to my remote starting mechanism??? Any thoughts?
Hello altgraph1: My name is Roger and I can help. The power steering and the brakes are directly connected. If the power steering pump fails you will also loose the brake assist. This vehicle does not have a vacuum booster you have a hydro-boost brake system. This unit uses the power steering pressure to assist the stopping of the vehicle. You will need special tools to determine if the power steering pump failed or if the hydro-boost system failed. Most likely the power steering pump failed. How ever to be sure it should be tested first. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
No fuse. The power steering pump handles the brake booster and the power steering, check the fluid level, if its ok, the pump is bad. I have heard of these pump shearing the shaft but I dont know of a cause. If you take the belt off, and the pump shaft is bad, you can grab the pulley and it will just pull off.

i hava a 96 T&C. the trans was put in new at 95k miles. It now has 150k and the tranny show says the differential blew a hole threw the tranny case. Is this a common problem for these cars? Will I need to do a tranny overhaul as part of the repair?

I started out where i could start it and it would work untill I put it in reverse then the fuse would burn out, so I would just continue to change out fuses. Now it won't stay started, so my question is the ecm bad or do I have a short somewhere???
