I have a 2001 Chevy silverado 1500 quad cab 4.8 vortec. When starting vehicle gas gauge reads E as I drive the truck the gas gauge needle will move up a little as to when i hit a pump it will jump to supposedly the amount of gas in the tank perhaps half a tank then suddenly the gas gauge needle will fall back to E again .The more I drive the truck the more the gas gauge needle will stabilize but I have no confidence in its reading .any suggestions as to testing sending unit or gauge..The fuel pump works just fine with no problem. ?? Perplexed ! Thanks
Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

short of dropping the tank or removing bed it seems i might be better off just replacing the whole unit pump & sending unit .i was hoping for a gauge
