I'm trying to change filter and transmission fuild

I'm trying to change my transmission fluid and filter in a 2002 F250 automatic tranny (7.3 Diesel). The manual shows MERCON and O'reilly is telling me it is MERCON 5? Also is it okay to add MERCON other than motorcraft to the tranny due to the remaining oil in the torque converter?

mercon is mercon , "5" is just an updated version of the original and should't matter who makes it, as long as it states it is mercon
