Symptoms of rear wheel bearing failure on a 1999 Taurus? (Sudden noise from the rear end occured while on the highway this afternoon. Prior to this sudden onset, the rear end was silent.)
A bad wheel bearing would sound like a loud humming noise together with vibration. If it is a bad wheel bearing you will need to change it. To change a rear wheel bearing in this vehicle you will need to lift and safely support the vehicle. Then remove the wheel and tire assembly. Remove the brake drum. Remove the dust cap from the center of the hub by prying it off. Remove the large bearing nut. The bearing should pull straight off. Install is the reverse of removal. The large bearing nut is tightened with a torque wrench to 120 ftlbs of torque.

Thanks for the information, as your advice appears to solidify what I surmised was the problem. Again, I thank you for the help.

make sure its not the brakes, sometimes it could be the rotors/ drums. remove rear rotor /drum , spin rear hub and try to pin point the noise, good luck.

I hadn't thought of that, as the sound became intense, only as my speed increased. However, your advice appears to be great. Thanks.

It could be a bearing going out, depends on the noise, but I wouldn't start changing right away. You also have braking components back there. Identify which side it is coming from and eliminate the possibility of a brake issue before you begin the task of bearing replacement. Just makes good sense! Good Luck, I hope this is helpful!

- When your bearings are failing, usually the first thing that you will notice is the tell tail whine that comes from the offending wheel. Secondly, as the bearing gets worse, you may notice heat build up in the area. Once this starts it is a matter of time until you have wheel ceasure, "lock up". If it is allowed to get this bad, you may have to replace other components as well. Good Luck!

I recently puchased a 2000 Olds Intrigue. I want to change oil and the oil fiter is behind a plastic cap on the oil pan. What kind of wrench do I need to get the cap off. I've got several kinds of filter wrenches but none of them will work.
