1985 El Camino - Tachometer is showing approximately twice the RPM then the engine is actually turning. Where should I be looking for the fix?

if its an aftermarket tach some are adjustable for four-six=or eight cyl. engines, if yu have an eight cyl, then the tach is reading four cyls
