1993 ford ranger 4x4 3.0 L Idle problem

to fast hot and too fast cold that it?
well here is normal, its a G16 engine, a Vitara with Sidekick badge.
G16 in cold weather, start and race idle at about 1500 rpm
or more if in ALASKA, you never said that or how cold it is.
the IAC valve is thermal, it and opens more colder, a fact.
the 8valve engine (black steel top) is faster. cold idle
then drops in a few seconds, to 1500rpm
at this time, the ECU brain does NOT control idle speeds at all.
the the engine warms up by virtue of the thermostat
as it warms to 150F to on way to 180f stock temp.
the ECU then takes control of the idle speeds.
got that so far?
so at 180f the idle is 800 rpm (800 is hard coded in the ECU,
ad ECU regulates this, unless you turn on the A.C , and if that happens 1000rpm is called up.
if not the ECU cant control it or the ECU is in limphome mode or worse.

if you insert the diagnostic jumper
does the CEL lamp flash 12s
it must.
see this paper clip this is your only scan tool.
it is crude but that is all you get until 1996.

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues. Engine idles rough.

Has it ever been tune up,

Code 37 is torque converter clutch solenoid failure. Transmission wont shift in and out of overdrive.

One possibility is a buildup of dirt and sludge in and around the idle air control valve. The buildup causes the idle air valve to stick.

Sounds like a bad engine thermostat. Let me know if you need anything further

Please check your idle controller whch is normally located near the air intake.Sometimes cleaning them and putting them back solve this problem.

First confirm it is either gas or eastter. Wayer/condedste collects at the tail oip as a byproduct of the caralyctic converter on cold rngine It normally occurs on firts start of a cokd enginw. the ebgine idles low because it is col, but should reyutn to normsl after warm uo.. If for sure iys gasolinem and the engine runs eiygh, then angihector is bad, good luck. I hope this helped yyou

This sounds like a fuel problem at the carb. What it's doing is termened hunting a nd can generally be corrected by a simple adjustment of the carb. Engine at idle and neutral set rpms at lowest idle , around 640 rpms. then adjust the a/f ratio screws to balance carb. Screw both screws all the way in, do not force ,or needle and sear damage will occir. Now back each out to 1.5 turns That is your start point Adjust one screw in and out slowly until you you feel its best effact on ide whicjh should slightly increase. repeat with other screw, in and out slowly . listening to the engine idle. if idle has increase due to your adjustmebt, repwat process after lowering the idle speed again with the idle screw. When you get to the point the screws no longer affect the idle the engine show sound and run smoothly at idle, make sure you resert the idle to 650rpms for an automatic trans and 650-750 for manual trans. I hoped this helped- good luck.. If it still does it, the carb may nrrd the float checked and st.
