I had the car in for a tune up and oil change and they replaced the battery. Now when I drive the car, only sometimes, when I step on the gas the engine revs and doesnt want to go, goes to 4000 rpms, when I take my foot off the gas it seems to kick in, I have to be driving for a half hour or more, a short trip to the store and it doesnt happen. This happened the same day i picked it up after having the work done, it had never happened before. 2002 elantra. I have had this car since brand new. Then the other day it stalled on me, first time ever. any ideas

Was the transmission fluid replaced during the tune up. If so make sure that it is filled to the proper level.

The info below was taken from a Hyundai forum. I believe if you replace the Throttle position sensor it will fix your trouble.

"Sounds like the TPS is bad. It's a common problem.

Don't drive it like that too much, it's tearing up your transmission. You need to fix it soon."

If your jeep has an EGR valve, try removing it and giving it a good clean with carb cleaner. A bad EGR valve will cause surging while driving.

What parts di i need for a tune up

Replace the fuel filter. If you have a fuel-injection system, regular cleaning isn't necessary unless the injectors are clogged.
  • Step 2 Change the spark plugs (unless they're platinum, in which case you have 30,000 more miles to go). Also examine the spark plug wires and replace as needed. A new set of high-quality wires is worth the cost. They may be permanently attached to the distributor cap, so it will have to be changed as well.
  • Step 3 Replace the distributor cap and rotor if your car has them (some newer models with distributorless ignition don't).
  • Step 4 Change the points and condenser if you have an older car (roughly 1978 or older) that doesn't feature electronic ignition. You'll actually want your points changed, or at least adjusted, every six months or so (if they're changed, check the ignition timing as well).
  • Step 5 Check the ignition timing and adjust as needed (rare for a car with electronic ignition--post-1980--and some cars don't allow this at all).
  • Step 6 Adjust the valves as needed (unless your car has hydraulic valves). Be sure to replace the valve-cover gasket as well, especially if you see oil on top of your engine.
  • Step 7 Check the belts. Replace if worn.
  • Step 8 Check the fluids under the hood and replenish as necessary. Change the oil and oil filter if it's been 3,000 miles since the last oil change.
  • Step 9 Replace the air filter, which should be changed between major services--every 15,000 miles--as well.
  • Step 10 Adjust the clutch, if you have a manual transmission (although some cars now sport self-adjusting clutches).
  • Step 11 Service the battery, adding distilled water (if required), cleaning terminals and cable ends.
  • Step 12 Replace the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. It can make your car run rough or stall if it gets clogged, and it's cheap and easy to replace..... hope this helped mate. Rate out of 4 above...

What do you call a tune up?

U are correct, a 'tune up' is not an oil change, although the oil certainly can be changed at the time of a tune up (every 3k miles or twice a year if u don't drive much, and always change the oil filter too). Cars differ, mostly older to newer as to what can and should be done for a tune up. A car from the 1960's would need more parts replaced more often than a new car today (example: electronic ignitions of newer cars eliminate ignition points replacement, and generally, replacement is not as often of other parts: example, spark plugs).
So, a tune up can include spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and I would include fuel and air filters. There are exceptions to this too, making it more complicated to generalize what to replace, as wires and spark plugs can last 100k miles now, some vehicles don't have the traditional dist. cap and rotor to replace. Check your car owners manual for an idea of what to replace and how often. If u don't have the original owners manual, check the car manufacturers web site for info. Good luck with the tune up!
